Nahime G. Aguirre Mtanous MA, LSW, ASDCS has received her Master’s and Bachelor’s from the University of Chicago, where she specialized her coursework to understand therapeutic applications for neurodivergent folk in a trauma-informed and justice-oriented manner. Nahime’s work focuses on improving the mental health of individual people through community, action, and empowerment. As a first-generation Latina woman with additional Spanish and Latin-American diaspora experience, Nahime helps clients with emotional difficulties surrounding the trauma of immigration, acculturation, and inclusion processes. Her work in both English and Spanish centers the healing of marginalized communities and individuals through different techniques, borrowing from ACT, DBT, psychoanalysis, harm reduction practices, relational theories, and neurodivergent/disability/mad studies on mental health.
Nahime’s previous six years of therapeutic experience have centered on the development of mental wellness for people with anxiety, depression, panic disorders, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and their family members, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), Cognitive delays, Tourette’s, OCD, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and any patient with atypical neurological development and neurodivergent presentation. Nahime holds a QIDP certification from the Illinois Division of Developmental Disabilities to conduct supportive services for people with IDD and their families/caretakers.
Nahime’s approach includes harnessing the power of accompaniment to recognize and support individual decision-making, the development of psychological flexibility, identifying core values, and the development of close interpersonal and intrapersonal connections. In this time, Nahime’s therapeutic work and research has received various awards and commendations, including the University of Chicago’s Diversity Award for neurodiversity advocacy, the national Heumann-Armstrong Award for advocacy against discrimination for people with mental illnesses, and a federal LEND fellowship to support research for social and mental health supports for neurodivergent people with disabilities. Nahime’s work has also been cited multiple times in both English and Spanish newspapers, highlighting the need for mental health supports for people with disabilities.
